General Description

The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner. The Nurse Practitiioner (NP) will work in the clinical care and education of patients with diabetes in the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Diabetes Center. He/she will work with a strong focus on quality and patient satisfaction as a member of a multi-disciplinary team with endocrinologists, other nurse practitioners, diabetes educators and nutritionists.

The Nurse Practitioner will conduct an average of 8 half-day clinic sessions per week, with activities including: completion of outpatient evaluations of return patients; educating patients on diabetes care, insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitors; and completing occasional telephone calls to follow-up with patients, review laboratory results, address ongoing medical issues, and to refill prescriptions. He/she will participate in the Diabetes Center’s diabetes education curriculum and will actively interact with the provider community institutionally, regionally, and nationally to contribute to the continuous advancement of diabetes care. While a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) degree is desired, care provided during the first year in this position can be used towards a CDE degree, if one has not already been obtained.

Essential Job Functions:

The Nurse Practitioner will see patients referred by physicians at the Diabetes Center and elsewhere for management of diabetes and one-on-one diabetes education. Adjusts medications and performs physical evaluations and provides patient education consistent with the role of a Nurse Practitioner.

Participates as an expert clinician in occasional institutional or divisional activities that enhance the overall quality of care in this specific area of nursing. Works closely with other staff in the Diabetes Center including other Nurse Practitioners, Endocrinologists, a Registered Dietician, and clinic support staff. Remains up-to-date on professional education in clinical diabetes. Initiates insulin pump therapy, educating patients on insulin pump therapy and adjustment of insulin delivery settings.

Meets with representatives from pharmaceutical companies and diabetes equipment manufacturers, to remain up-to-date on products for Diabetes Center patients. Actively participates in the diabetes education curriculum; develops lectures, talks and in-services as needed. Conducts telephone triage of patients and deals with on-going patient phone calls and prescription refills. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, and alignment. Completes clinical documentation and billing activities necessary for efficient and effective clinic operations.

Ability to analyze data and make independent judgments regarding patient care consistent with his/her scope of practice. Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations.

Communication:

Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH and Bayview Medical Center credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Familiarity with regulations and standards governing NP’s in the State of Maryland. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Demonstrated customer service skills required. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities and work in a fast-paced environment.
