The pharmacy buyer reports to the Director of Pharmacy. Under general supervision, responsible for the purchase, inventory management and payment authorization of pharmaceuticals for the Hospital and administers the procurement, distribution and maintenance of accounts of pharmaceutical purchase orders for the Hospital. These functions are performed in accordance with the Hospitals philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for the cost effective inventory management of pharmaceuticals, including identification and reporting of inventory requirements and economical reorder quantities to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Issues purchase orders to primary or alternate suppliers via on-line computer or manual procedures.
  • Verifies delivery, reconciles cost/quantity differences and approves invoice payment.
  • Maintains vendor item compliance required by group purchasing contracts.
  • Administers Hospital purchase requisitions which includes vendor selection, purchasing, dispensing and billing procedures.
  • Performs drug charges/credits.
  • Confers with sale representatives regarding new contracts and product availability.
  • Executes drug return program to vendor for invoice credit.
  • Performs drug recall activities.
  • Research availability of special pharmaceutical requests.
  • Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • State Pharmacy Technician license required
  • National pharmacy technician certification (PTCB)
  • 3 +years’ experience working as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Purchasing experience preferred
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical products, vendors, drug nomenclature and contract negotiations. Accounting skills. Computer skills. Knowledge of GPO pricing and contract compliance
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
  • Strong customer service skills required
  • Ability to manage several tasks at the same time; Ability to focus on tasks ; Ability to evaluate operating conditions ; Ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology such as computers, smart phones and tablets
  • Ability to work all shifts, weekends & holidays.
